Dr Ida Johnson received the National Community Reinvestment Coalition's esteemed National Achievement Award on March 12,2010 in Washington , DC. The National CommunityReinvestment Award recognizes an individual who, through their work, has best exemplified the ideals and values of the community reinvestment movement and economic justice. Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. presented the awards to seven community leaders during NCRC 20th anniversary conference. Detailed informationabout the event follows below.
Dr Johnson came to the Quad Cities in 1967 and continued her education at St. Ambrose and Mary Crest College. She started Central and Western Neighborhood out of her own living room in 1973,which later became known as United Neighbors Inc. Dr. Ida Johnson has sat on and chaired several boards. She has been recognized for her tremendous effort to help build a better community in the Quad Cities through several awards. Just to name a few, A. Phillip Randolph Community Award, Walter Beuse Award, The Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. lifetime achievement award, An Honorary Doctorate Degree from St. Ambrose University and a day named after her by the City of Davenport. Most recently she was chosen as the 2009 Iowa African American Womens Leadership Conference as one of three Honorees for outstanding contributions to the mentoring and leadership of African American women in Iowa.
