idaDirector Dr. Ida Johnson Chosen An

Iowa History Maker!

We would like to congratulation Dr. Ida Johnson, the executive director of United Neighbors, who was honored Sept. 24 as one of Iowa's most valued history makers at the 2009 History Makers Gala in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Dr. Johnson had the original idea for United Neighbors 35 years ago as a young mother who wanted to create a safe place for her children to play. Before long, she was managing a small community action agency out of her home. Today, the agency has grown to a busy neighborhood center with a wide range of free services available to everyone in the Iowa Quad-Cities. The History Makers Gala, a formal evening of fellowship, celebration and live music, was held  Thursday, Sept. 24, at the African American Museum of Iowa, 55 12th St. SE, Cedar Rapids.

Home Foreclosures Are Spiking In The Quad Cities

Home foreclosures are spiking in the Quad Cities area according to a new report issued by RealtyTrac. The online service reports a 40% increase in local foreclosures in the first half of this year compared to the last half of 2008. Insiders blame the economy more than predatory loans for the recent upswing.

Owners of more than a thousand Quad City properties have filed for foreclosure according to the report. That's about six out of every 100 homes in the Quad City metro area.

At the Scott County Courthouse, 281 foreclosure auctions during the first six months of this year. That's already up from 238 in 2008. Since 2001, United Neighbors has been a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agency. We assist homeowners who are facing possible foreclosure by providing information and guidance as to the options that are available. As a growing number of our citizens face foreclosure, we have convened a group of public and private agencies to enhance existing counseling services by increasing the capacity of counseling agencies to serve more individuals. Our goal is to motivate homeowners to seek help by calling United Neighbors at 563-322-7363 or Iowa Mortgage Help Hotline at 877-622-4866.
