About United Neighbors

pict0.jpgUnited Neighbors, Inc. was formed in 1980.

It grew out of Central & Western Neighborhood Development Corporation, which started in 1973. Central & Western served as a neighborhood center with youth activities and general assistance programs. UNI’s programs were at first fully United Way funded. These were Information- Referral/Advocacy and Neighborhood Organizing. Soon, the organization added more programs and saw increasing numbers of participants and clients served. By the mid-1980s, UNI had added youth programs, including an award-winning drama troupe for teens, the Summer Parks program and the Clean Team.By the late 1980s, UNI had added housing rehab and downpayment assistant programs. Born from neighborhood action to revitalize Davenport's older neighborhoods. A myriad of other projects and programs followed. Funding expanded to include CDBG, RDA, Bechtel Trusts and other sources. All the while, UNI has maintained its original structure and purposes. It is neighborhood-controlled through a mainly elected board of directors, and it serves primarily low-and moderate-income residents of Davenport. In the mid-1990s, UNI successfully undertook a capital campaign to build a new headquarters at 808 Harrison Street. This $400,000-plus project allowed the organization to expand activities, meetings, and classes and return to a single-family home as its original office at 618 W. 8th Street.
